The Magnificent Kindness Diet
Have you ever just wanted to hug your family and your kids because they’re just so wonderful it brings tears to your eyes?
Now, true, this is a diet blog site….but let me tell you, today my kids outdid themselves in utter kindness to Mom.
It all happened when I made the mistake of opening the closet of my sons (in their single digits). Apparently, for the bit of a brief history of time, they decided that ‘cleaning the room’ meant
"Shoving everything inedible, edible and anywhere in between into the closet and hoping Mom didn’t open it."
Well! Today I rather inanely checked out their room, and realized that an earthquake that registered a 9.8 on the Richter scale would have left less mess. So…..instead of playing on their computers today, they had to clean their room.
Enter my two eldest! I asked them to pitch in and help with the utter mounds of unidentified objects that were trying to consume the room. And with zero complaints whatsoever, they BOTH did everything I requested…from which other kids would run screaming from the room!
Honestly, they were truly wonderful. I hear from other karate moms and friends how their kids will never help out with the family or complain when asked to pitch in…but I am really, truly and completely blessed by my children.
So I had to blog about it! And because this is my diet blog, I had to add some nifty ideas relating to dieting! And here it is!
If you know of friends who are on their own personal weight-loss journey, and see they’re struggling to stay on the wagon, or perhaps they’re becoming beset by doubts, honor both them and you by your kindness and empathy to their struggles.
When it comes right down to it, we’re all fellow travelers in this strange thing called LIFE…and being able to reach out verbally or with a pat to the hand or what have you and say, "Hey! I really feel for what you’re going through, don’t worry, I’m with you every step of the way!"
You’d be surprised at just how much brighter you’ve made the other person’s day.
I’ll tell you this - after my girls had finished helping me (and it took 45 minutes), I just sat on the floor and felt a deep abiding love and appreciation for their kindness. Sure, logically they have to help out anyways (in my family, doing chores is part of their responsibilities), but this went above and beyond mere mortal drudgery (trust me, a rabid hyena would have been frightened by the contents of that closet).
So! Be like my kids, and indulge in the Kindness Diet every day. They sure taught me a thing or 17.
Enjoy,
Barbara Ling
