Choosing Quality Diet Advice Sites
Morning!
I came across the following article from MSNBC, to wit:
…Safe clicking tips when surfing for diet advice
To avoid sales scams, look for sites affiliated with well-known groups
Here are some basic tips for sussing out sites that are worth the click.
As a general rule, sites with the extensions .gov, .edu and sometimes .org contain accurate, unbiased information, says Jeanne Goldberg, a professor of nutrition science at Tufts’ Friedman School of Nutrition.
But legitimate commercial sites — usually with .com endings — can be more user-friendly.
The trick with commercial sites is to look for a stamp of legitimacy, Goldberg says, such as an affiliation with a well-known organization, and to avoid being sucked into a sales gimmick….MORE….
Oh, truer words have NEVER been spoken! The diet and weight loss industry has been, and always will be, poisoned by people who want to scam you out of your last dime, cupcake and protein bar.
It’s most depressing indeed! For example, check out these consumer advisories:
- CONSUMER WATCH - Getting the skinny on miracle-diet drugs - Millions are paid to settle false advertising cases, but a new player says it’s the real thing.
- Avoiding Common Diet Scams
- Weighing the evidence in diet ads by the FTC
- Diet Scams - Fighting Consumer Fraud
So….how can you tell what’s legit and what’s a scam?
Here are some of my favorite techniques:
1.) Network with the people who know. Folks who run blogs like
have actually walked the walk they talk. Any advice they give…I listen.
2.) Ask at popular forums. Got dieting questions? People at:
are generally very helpful indeed.
3.) Put your wallet AWAY. If it sounds too good to be true……RESEARCH EVERYTHING FIRST! Do NOT give into the temptation sparked by the seductive messages of the latest "Buying the Dream" product (ie, diet pills, diet patches, weird exercise machines, etc.etc.etc.).
Remember, when it comes to losing weight, there is one way, and one way ONLY, do to it. You have to commit to a long-term lifestyle change…something with which you can live for the rest of your life.
The good news is, once you’ve turned the key in your mind, you’re well along the personal hero’s journey of a new you. Enjoy it!
Best wishes,
Barbara Ling
